One day before the start of the Bundesliga season, the police union in Bremen criticized the strain on police officers from regular assignments at football games.
“For our police colleagues, the start of the Bundesliga again means enormous stress and risk of injury,” says a GdP statement. The season opening game between Werder and the German champions FC Bayern Munich takes place in Bremen.
Using the example of the Hanseatic city, GdP state chairman Nils Winter listed: “The riot police, which has been severely decimated in terms of personnel, and the alarm hundreds from the areas of protection and water protection police will have to ensure security in and around the stadiums. Colleagues must also provide support the criminal police and other areas of the entire Bremen police force and the local police authority in Bremerhaven.
The union calls on professional clubs, football associations and politicians to “present a strategy to relieve the police and increase security in football. You are called upon to get the increasing problem of violence at football events under control.”
