Police are armed with 20,000 emblems: ‘It’s a carnival thing’

The special carnival emblems of the police force in East Brabant flew out the door last year. Enthusiasts even came to the police station to score a ‘collector’s item’. “It was an unexpected success,” says Luc Dirckx, local police officer in Deurne. “We even made a call on social media not to come to the station anymore. The emblems on the desks were gone.”

This year there are enough emblems, as the police said this year. ‘We have ordered no less than 20,000 pieces for our corps alone. The police force of the Zeeland-West-Brabant unit has also ordered a large number of these emblems,” says Luc (50), who has worked for the police for more than 25 years. He is the face of the emblem campaign of uncle officer. The emblems contain the text: ‘Hello blaauw, come quickly, it’s too much fun’.

The sought-after emblems can be obtained through various competitions. “There are various promotions running on TikTok, It’s really a carnival thing. Last Sunday, colleagues in the west of the province already handed out plenty of emblems during the kluten in Breda.”

The purpose of the police emblem campaign: to come into contact with the public. “Speak to officers on the street. If all goes well, they should have emblems with them. We try to remove the barrier. We are not bogeymen and are easily approachable.”

The police emblem will soon also be ironed on Luc’s carnival costume. “I also celebrate carnival myself. It was brought to me from an early age. My work phone turns off and I immerse myself in carnival.”
