The Eisbären Berlin celebrated their fourth away win in a row in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) and thus defended the top of the table.
On Friday evening, the Berlin team won 5:2 (0:0, 1:1, 4:1) at Löwen Frankfurt thanks to a strong final third. Frederik Tiffels, Manuel Wiederer, Zach Boychuk, Ty Ronning and Marcel Noebels scored for the Berliners, while 22-year-old goalie Jonas Stettmer put in a strong performance in his competitive debut for the Eisbären.
In front of 6,687 spectators in the Frankfurt ice rink, both teams played quickly from the start. However, Stettmer and his Frankfurt counterpart Joe Cannata made some good saves to ensure that the first break went into the first break without any goals. After the restart, however, it only took 22 seconds before Tiffels scored the guests’ lead in the capital’s first power play. The home side responded with Cameron Brace’s equalizing goal.
At the beginning of the final period, the Eisbären increased the tempo and were promptly rewarded: Wiederer used a strong pass from Tobias Eder, and Boychuk increased just 13 seconds later. Ronning and Noebels further extended the lead before Dominik Bokk shortened the lead with a late power-play goal for the Hessians.
