Eisbären trainer Serge Aubin sees no signs of saturation in his team even after two championship titles in a row.
“What I like about this team is how humble they are,” said the Canadian on Monday evening at the Wellblechpalast in Hohenschoenhausen.
“It’s tough and we know it. We don’t take anything for granted,” said the 47-year-old about the mission of defending his title. The goal hasn’t changed: “We want to win the last game. Then it was a pretty good year.”
Several hundred fans cheered the German champions on Monday at the first public training session of the season. “I have to say the lads came back in great form which shows me they are still hungry. They had a great summer,” said the coach. “Now we just have to rebuild the machine so that we can go out on the ice and think as one.”
Serge Aubin was satisfied with the first training sessions. The newcomers fit in well and the team chemistry is growing. “We brought in guys who are a good size, who are great skaters and have good personalities,” Aubin said. It’s a good mix of experience and youth.
At the weekend, the polar bears will be contesting their first tests at the Dolomitencup in the South Tyrolean town of Neumarkt. On Saturday (8:00 p.m.) the polar bears will play against the Swiss first division club EHC Biel-Bienne for a place in the final on Sunday. The team starts in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) on September 18 (4:30 p.m.) with the Nuremberg Ice Tigers.
