Poland will check for migrants at the border crossing with Slovakia | Abroad

“I have instructed the Minister of the Interior to introduce checks on minibuses, vans, cars and buses suspected of carrying illegal immigrants,” Morawiecki said during an election rally.

Ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) has made migration a core issue in the run-up to next month’s elections. Slovakia is now struggling with a wave of illegal migrants. The number of migrants entering Slovakia has increased sharply compared to last year, according to Slovak authorities.

Poland and Slovakia are both part of the European Schengen zone. The reintroduction of border controls in the Schengen area is only permitted in exceptional cases.
