Tadej Pogacar made his fourth triumph perfectly at the largest bike race in the world when the Tour de France returned to Paris. Jonas Vingegaard becomes second overall, Florian Lipowitz sensationally third and gains the white jersey. The last day victory went to Wout van Aert after a thriller in the final.
After 2023, the professionals were again about the prestigious victory in Paris at the 21st stage. Because of the summer games on which Seine ended the last stage 2024 in Nice. And this time, a legacy of the game caused a completely different race. It went like the Olympic street race over the Paris local mountain Montmartre.
And the 1.1 kilometer climb was also crucial. In the second of three passages, Pogacar caused a first selection with a pace sharpening – in the rain of Paris, the man in the yellow jersey was not a risk. Only five professionals were able to follow the Slovenia. With Van Aert, Davide Ballerini, Matteo Jorgenson, Matteo Trentin and Matej Mohoric.
Van der Aert the strongest on the Montmartre
The five-member top group went to the last Montmartre Passage with a lead of 47 seconds. For Lipowitz in the field behind it, it was already clear that he had three overall rank and also the white jersey. Pogacar drove over again, van Aert attacked the middle of the climb on the wet paving stones while sitting and passed Pogacar. The Belgian was clearly the strongest, had seven seconds above – a gripping race in front of a lot of spectators. And Van Aert was no longer able to win over the last kilometers. Ballerini and Mohoric took second and three and three places, Pogacar drove fourth in the finish line.
For Van Aert it was already the tenth stage victory at the Tour de France. And the 30-year-old also ensured the first success of the Visma team on this tour.
Time already 50 kilometers before the finish
The 21st stage with 132 kilometers from Mantes-La-Ville to Paris was deliberately planned by the route planners-they had been inspired by the Olympic street race and the phenomenal atmosphere on the side of the road. A real race in Paris, more than a round of honor with a target sprint – that was the wish. However, the racing jury decided at short notice because of the predicted rain that the timing was already before the first Montmartre passage. The paving stones on the Montmartre were too much risk. The time was therefore taken 50 kilometers before the finish. After that, for most drivers it was only necessary to reach the finish line. For the aspirants on the prestigious victory in Paris, the race really started.

Pogacar youngest Quadruple winner the story
The first two places seem to be reserved for Pogacar and Vingegaard. Since 2020, the two professionals, who also drove in their own league this year, have shown the front places. Above all, Pogacar writes history. At the age of 26, he has already won the tour four times, so Jung has managed to do that before the Slovenia. Pogacar won four stages on this tour, in total there are already 21. Incidentally, he collected so many mountain points, so that he was also at the front in the rating for the dotted jersey.
