Poelkapelle builds new school with extracurricular childcare and sports hall

“The current school was built in the early 1920s,” says director Luc Vanbeselaere. “The school is therefore 100 years old and is in urgent need of renovation. When new parents come to the school, they look at the infrastructure and I sometimes have to disappoint them a bit. We really need that new school.”

In addition, there will be a new neighborhood in Poelkapelle. Currently 170 students are taking lessons in the Free Primary School ‘De Ooievaar’, but that district will increase the number of students. The new school will provide this.

The new school will have a sports hall of 500 square meters that is also accessible to residents. “The intention is that the facilities are available to all residents of Langemark-Poelkapelle,” says Mayor Dominique Cool.

In addition, out-of-school childcare will also be provided in the new buildings. The original plans to house it in the nearby church caused discussions in the city council for years. Those plans were scrapped in 2019.

Four million euros

The project will cost approximately four million euros. The Kerkfabriek buys the land from a place that makes it available to the school. The municipality gives the school an interest-free loan of 1.2 million euros.

“The aim is to have the school ready by the end of 2024,” said Mayor Cool.
