Podcast about the black community’s role in fashion

Tommy Hilfiger is launching a podcast series that will explore the Black community’s often-overlooked contribution to American fashion.

The five-episode weekly series, titled The Invisible Seam : Unsung Stories of Black Culture, was produced as part of the brand’s People’s Place program and in collaboration with The Fashion and Race Database and Pineapple Street Studios by Audacy developed. The Fashion and Race Database is an online platform “whose tools allow users to rethink the narrative of fashion history”. Pineapple Street Studios is a podcast studio based in New York.

The Role of Black Culture in American Fashion

“We all have a responsibility to shape a future that is truly just for BIPOC creators. It’s incredibly meaningful that some of fashion’s most prominent voices have come together to create this podcast. It is a necessary step in recognizing, recognizing, sharing and celebrating the contribution that Black people have made to defining modern fashion and culture,” Hilfiger wrote in a statement.

The show, which kicks off April 20, will be hosted by Kimberly Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Fashion Studies at Ryerson University in Toronto, and will feature interviews with experts including designers Jeffrey Banks, Romeo Hunte and April Walker, and museum curator: inside, stylists and brand founders.

“Tommy Hilfiger’s partnership with the Fashion and Race Database is a milestone — as it demonstrates what’s possible when industry leaders listen and collaborate with those who are committed to a more diverse and socially responsible fashion system,” said Jenkins. “Education and research in fashion is often isolated from the system of fashion.I hope other fashion labels take a break from our production with Randy Cousin [SVP des People’s Place Programme] and Tommy Hilfiger’s People Place programs will be inspired.”
