The “Pharaohs” narrowly won the first leg 1-0 at home – thanks to an own goal by Senegalese Saliou Ciss in the fourth minute. The Egyptians took revenge, at least for the time being, because Senegal had prevailed on penalties in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Algeria favorite against Cameroon
Meet in another top duel Algeria and Cameroon on each other. Cameroon had reached the semi-finals as hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Algeria had started the tournament as the defending champions. The Algerians won the first leg 1-0 away.
Islam Slimani scored the winning goal in the 40th minute. This gives the team a clear advantage in the second leg, because unlike in UEFA competitions, the away goals rule applies in the play-offs.
Advantage for Tunisia
This also applies to Tunisia. The North Africans won the first leg in mali 1-0 and are therefore favorites in the second leg. Moussa Sissako scored an own goal in the 36th minute and had to leave the field in the 40th minute with a red card after an emergency brake.
Also the duel between Nigeria and Ghana is a top game, two of the best teams on the continent meet. The first leg ended 0-0. Ghana last qualified for a World Cup in 2014, Nigeria qualified in 2018.
There was also no winner between the DR Congo and Morocco. Because of the away goal in the 1-1 first leg, the North Africans are the favorites in Casablanca. Yoane Wissa of Premier League club Brentford FC put Congo ahead after 12 minutes. Tarik Tissoudali equalized for Morocco in the 76th minute. Kongo’s Ngonda Muzinga saw the yellow-red card shortly before the end.
Two of the continent’s top teams had previously been eliminated. Ivory Coast lost to Cameroon while South Africa lost to Ghana.
