Playing football in a special carnival shirt: lion with beer mugs in his claws

It is a tradition that has become indispensable among the football players of RKC-Waalwijk: the crazy football shirts that the players wear around carnival. This year the football club is again presenting a carnival shirt. This time the connection between the carnival party, football and Waalwijk is central. The players will wear the festive uniform in the match against NEC on February 9.

The shirts were traditionally presented at 11 past 11. The Waalwijk club did this on Monday morning. The shirt is based on a mix of the traditional colors red, yellow and blue, divided into a cube pattern.

In each cube you can see a ‘detail’ that represents carnival in Waalwijk. From a mask to a prince stitch. The lion on the football club’s logo is also ready for carnival: the lion has beer mugs in its claws on the uniforms.

Every year the football club uses its carnival shirts to draw attention to something. This year they want to honor the local carnival associations in Schoenlapperslaand, as Waalwijk is called during carnival. “They form the basis of carnival in Schoenlapperslaand, full of passion, pride and creativity,” the club writes on their site.

If you want one of the crazy carnival costumes, you have to be quick. In recent years, the shirts have sold out very quickly. Last year, the shirts worn by the players were auctioned for charity. The money raised by the shirts went to Giro555, which then raised money for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
