Former Bundesliga professional Sergey Mandreko has died at the age of 50 after a long and serious illness. This was announced on Tuesday by his ex-club Rapid Vienna. The former midfielder has suffered for years from the disease ALS, which damages nerve cells needed for muscle movement.

“Sergey fought this terrible disease more than bravely over the years and I will always remember him as a great person and a wonderful companion,” said Managing Director Zoran Barisic, who founded a legendary with Mandreko, Stephan Marasek and Dietmar Kühbauer in the 90s Quartet at Rapid, which went down in club history as the green and white “Daltons”, based on the four brothers from the “Lucky Luke” comic series.

Mandreko played for Hertha BSC from 1997 to 2000 and for VfL Bochum from 2000 to 2003. In Germany he made 67 appearances in the Bundesliga and 26 more games in the 2nd division. Mandreko also played for the Soviet Union, Russia and Tajikistan. Most recently, he worked as a coach for the Viennese club Landstrasser AC-Inter until 2017.
