Plans for a safe station neighborhood in Bruges presented to local residents
Yesterday, the city and the Flemish government unveiled their far-reaching plans. There will be pedestrian and cyclist tunnels at the Unesco roundabout and from the ring to the vestiges. Paul Deloof: “It’s interesting. I think something has to be done. It is necessary anyway. The conflicts between pedestrians, bicycles and cars something has to be done anyway.”
Two tunnels, one from the UNESCO roundabout to the center and one from the station to the ramparts, should ensure that pedestrians and cyclists no longer have to cross the ring. Safer for vulnerable road users, and less congestion on the ring road. Wies Leupe: “The problem is that there is an enormous amount of traffic on the Bruges ring road and also at Stationsplein. A huge number of tourists are also on their way to the Minnewater, into the city. That is a very big problem for the inhabitants. I think the proposal is a good solution.”
The plans are not final yet. Tomorrow there will be an information market for all Bruges residents. There will be an information booth in the entrance hall of the station and in the kiss and ride zone until 13 March. Residents’ comments will be taken into account and the design will be further elaborated during this and next year.
