On March 25, 2022, Placebo’s eighth album NEVER LET ME GO will be released – their first since LOUD LIKE LOVE from 2013. The British band around singer Brian Molko had previously released the songs “Beautiful James”, “Surrounded By Spies ‘ and ‘Try Better Next Time’. With “Happy Birthday In The Sky” the fourth pre-single has now been released.
Brian Molko shares the following about “Happy Birthday In The Sky”:
“‘Happy Birthday In The Sky’ is one of the most heartbreaking moments on the album for me. ‘Happy Birthday In The Sky’ is a phrase I’ve been using for quite some time. When I say happy birthday to people who are no longer with us, it conveys the kind of heartbreak that I think we (as a band) are very, very good at conveying. The sense of loss, the sense of despair. It is as if part of your body and soul has been ripped out of you in an unjust manner. And you yearn and yearn.”
He further says:
“I think it’s so immediate and emotionally intense that it really conveys something very powerful to the listener. And that’s basically all I care about. At what price? Who cares! As long as the song really moves people, I don’t care what sacrifices you have to make to get there. It’s not too bad to live those emotions – you’re very, very alive and in the moment while you’re doing it.”
