Pitch-black smoke from the Groningen fire is moving across the A28 and North Drenthe

In Groningen this afternoon a fire broke out in a storage with Styrofoam blocks. The pitch-black clouds of smoke passed over the A28 and were clearly visible in the north of Drenthe. As far as Assen and 2e Exloërmond, reports came about a dark plume of smoke in the distance.

The fire broke out on Boerhaavelaan, near the Martini Hospital. The polystyrene blocks are used in the work on the ring road in Groningen.

Local residents were alerted via an NL-Alert and were instructed to close windows and doors. The fire brigade pulled out with many vehicles and has now extinguished the fire, it is reported on Twitter.

Two people were arrested this afternoon. The police do not report what exactly they are suspected of, but both have been taken to the station. “We are investigating their involvement in the fire,” the police write.
