Domestic alternatives to tuna have been found for a few years now, when various canned goods made from domestic lake fish have appeared on store shelves. For example, in 2020 Pielinen Kalajaloste’s canned fish was sold out in several stores, when the product became very popular in an instant.
Now, for the first time, there will also be a plant-based alternative to tuna, when a completely new product appears under the Pirkka product family: canned soymeal. Canned fish are ready-to-use as they are, and can be used like tuna in, for example, salads, on top of pizza or in pasta sauce.
The new canned food series has four flavor options: chili-garlic, tomato-basil, lemon-pepper, and mildly seasoned, which can be seasoned to your own taste. The new products will appear in stores in February.
– We believe that consumers will find the novelty and take it as their own. Canned soy is an easy and quick way to add vegetables to everyday food, which is one of the wishes of Finns for this year, says the manager responsible for Kesko’s own brands Created by the wind in the bulletin.

Plant-based protein sources are of great interest to Finns at the moment. 42 percent of respondents to the Food Trends 2023 survey say that they would gladly replace meat with other protein-rich products. According to the survey, 18 percent plan to replace meat with other proteins even more this year.
