Pipo Pepa & Pop, the economy for children on Rai Yoyo

SCan they tackle topics that are “for adults” par excellence, such as economics and finance, with a “children’s” approach? It is the challenge of series Pipo, Pepa & Pop by Rai Yoyocreated by the sisters Fiorella and Maria Elena Congedo together with RAI KIDS, with the scientific advice of FLIC, the Financial Times Foundation for Education and Financial Inclusion, with the contribution of Apulia Film Fund.

Reading that heals: how to introduce children to books

An economics series for children is “Pipo, Pepa & Pop”, created by Rai Kids with the Financial Times

The series – 26 episodes of 7 minutes of 2D animation – can be seen for the first time, every day, at 10.30 am on Rai Yoyo and on RaiPlay. From 2 December, there will also be a double episode on Saturday and Sunday, at 4.30pm again on Rai Yoyo.

Can it work and make an impact on the adults of tomorrow (from 5 to 8 years old)? The winning strategies are all there. On the one hand the graphics. You “play” with numbers and symbols to become visually familiar with the material. Stock market graphs become the city skyline while the percentages flutter in the skies turning into butterflies. Furthermore, the currencies of the various countries of the world become corollas of colored flowers.

Through a cheerful mix of comedy, gags, music and adventure, each episode develops one and only one theme, and always within a known situation, which belongs to the daily experience of every family.

Pipo is the oldest and most instinctive, Pepa the most determined and prudent

The protagonists are the little brothers Pipo and Pepa, accompanied by their dog Pop: between a day at school and a family dinner, they will also learn to manage situations of an economic-financial nature.

For example. Why are duplicate album stickers a treasure? When to buy a new pair of football boots? How do the magic “ATM” card and the “money spitting” machine work?

What if Pipo, 8 years old, is the older brother, he is also the most instinctive and the least attentive to expenses. While little Pepa is wise and prudent, decidedly determined to become a successful business woman. Just to say: she has two piggy banks, one for monthly expenses and the other for extra-budgets.

Raising adults of tomorrow who are attentive to their own resources and those of the planet

During the episodes, the two brothers also interact with the Scottish elf Adam, character inspired by the father of modern economics Adam Smith: he lives in a magical piggy bank and is ready to play the bagpipes for every wrong answer given by Pipo and Pepa and to do a joyful dance for every correct solution.

Among the various topics addressed, saving and the importance of work, but also the choice of an investment, expense planning, the circular economy. Always with two guiding principles to guide the path: solidarity and teamwork.

The aim of the series, no doubt about it, is very “high”: to bring young users to grow, if not as little “economists”, certainly as human beings attentive to their own resources but also to those of others and of the planet.
