Pink pelican that escaped from Belgian zoo captured on Dutch golf course | Animals

A pink pelican that had been flying around the Dutch province of Brabant for days has been captured. Employees of the Beekse Bergen overpowered the bird in its sleep. The animal is tired and hungry, but healthy.

Animal ambulance employees had been trying to catch the pelican for a few days, but the animal kept running away when it saw the employees. The bird had already been seen at the golf course in Cromvoirt and at Zwijnsbergen Castle in Helvoirt.

Expert Jan Harteman contacted the animal ambulance on Sunday evening via social media. Harteman was able to tell its entire history based on the animal’s ring number. The pelican was born in Lithuania and lived in a Dutch zoo until 2019. The bird was then moved to a zoo in Belgium, where it escaped two weeks ago.

After a search by animal ambulance employees, the pelican turned out to have settled on the golf course in Vught. Employees from Beekse Bergen came to help on Monday morning and overpowered the bird in its sleep. The animal was taken to the Beekse Bergen, where it will be picked up by employees of the Belgian zoo.

It is not known which zoo the pelican escaped from.
