During the summer months of 2023, several ultrasonic devices were placed between the Bruane Bridge and the Schaaps Bridge on the Roeselare-Leie canal. “Simultaneously with the installation, a large-scale chemical and biological study into the impact of these devices was started in collaboration with the Flemish Environmental Society, the Provincial Center for Environmental Research, the Institute for Nature and Forest Research and Ghent University. The devices were removed in mid-September 2023 and it is currently being investigated to what extent the water system will recover,” says Kurt Himpe.
Stadslabo Brugge has also installed ultrasonic devices on the Bruges canals to combat blue-green algae and this has yielded good results.
