Pilar Fernández: Ceramics teach us to evaluate and improve – Brand

Pilar, what is your definition of being a good ceramist?

Ceramics is one of the oldest arts and although many new techniques have been developed today, the fundamental work remains the same. To be a ceramist you need patience, technique and above all a special sensitivity.

Creativity and uniqueness are essential, just as experience provides control and understanding of the subject. Being a good ceramist implies having an idea and the ability to execute it. I consider it essential to learn about the entire ceramic process, from the different types of ceramics, firing temperatures, the extraction of materials, the formulation of pastes and glazes, and the various work techniques. Buying a package of paste and some commercial glazes does not make you a ceramist.

Are there essential personal traits or qualities that can be developed in ceramics?

Ceramics is a great teacher, it teaches the importance of detachment and patience. At first you tend to cling to each piece, but with practice, you learn that detachment is part of the process and being able to see mistakes and understand them as a learning experience. I recommend to my students or artists with whom I collaborate that they do not save all the pieces, but rather observe them, analyze them and try again. Ceramics offer no guarantees, and learning to work with mistakes is crucial. Patience and detachment are valuable lessons that ceramics provide over time. Ceramics teaches us to continually evaluate and improve, allowing us to accept setbacks with a more relaxed and humorous perspective.

How do you analyze the role of women within the field of ceramic art?

Throughout history, women have faced challenges in recognizing their contributions to the artistic field, and ceramics have been no exception. In more recent times, its presence and influence in this field has grown significantly. His ability to merge tradition with innovation has resulted in the creation of works that are not only aesthetically striking, but also address cultural, social and personal issues with sensitivity and depth.

The narrative of contemporary ceramics has been transformed thanks to the diversity of approaches that women bring to the discipline. From reinventing traditional forms to introducing new techniques and styles, these artists have challenged pre-existing expectations and cemented their position as influential creators on the global art scene.
