What is the favorite music of famous Drenthe athletes and former athletes? What affects them? Which songs have influenced their lives? And do they listen to music while exercising? In Platen van de Athletes, Loes van der Laan talks to Drenthe’s top athletes about their taste in music and gets to know them better.
Former football player Peter Hoekstra is a guest in the first episode.
As a little boy, Peter Hoekstra dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. At the age of 14, he left Assen for the PSV football boarding school in Eindhoven. He has good memories of that: “That was a wonderful time. It was also wonderful to go back to Assen at the weekend. I always listened to music along the way.”
Peter loved going to the TT fair: “Hanging out with friends and doing dance moves to King Bee’s Back By Dope Demand,” he says, laughing.
Peter still always has music on. “I live a five-minute walk from my work at FC Groningen. Yet I listen to music in that short time.” Peter Hoekstra is the only Drent who has ever played with the Dutch national team at a European Football Championship. Before the matches he used music to boost himself up: “Half an hour before a match I put on a rap song to hype me up a bit. It gives you a more aggressive attitude.”
Peter doesn’t just listen to hip-hop. Classical and Spanish-language music is also featured. Peter explains when he listens to that and which songs he dances to with his wife and children in this episode of Platen van de Athletes.
