Witnesses tell the channel that the suspect drove his vehicle hundreds of meters on the sidewalk and hit several pedestrians. Two men, one in their sixties and one in their seventies, were killed, according to the police. Three children are among the injured. Two people would be in serious condition.
According to Canadian broadcaster CBC, the 38-year-old driver of the car fled after the collision, but later turned himself in. He has been arrested and an investigation into the circumstances of the drama is ongoing.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau responded to the incident via Twitter. “I am with the citizens of Amqui with all my heart,” Trudeau wrote in a message on Twitter. He also thanked the emergency workers.
