Photos of tin factory ‘Drenthina’ on display in Hema: ‘History is hot’

Photos and film footage of the former tin factory Drenthina can be seen at the Hema in the city since today. The Historical Circle Hoogeveen has entered into a partnership with the store. The images can be seen on the walls in the Hema restaurant every first Monday between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The images show how people walked in and out of the factory, how they worked with the machines and how products were assembled. There are also images of a visit to the factory of the then Queen Beatrix.

Next year De Historische Kring Hoogeveen will be forty years old. In the run-up to this anniversary, the association is busy recruiting as many members as possible. That is why they show the history of the old tin factory.

”For us this is a membership campaign,” says Johann Bisschop, chairman of the association. For its fortieth anniversary, the association would like to recruit 4,000 members. Now they are still at 2850, but with the new collaboration, Bishop wants to reach 4000.

‘A year and a half ago I wrote a book about the can factory. It contained beautiful photos.” According to Bisschop, these photos are interesting for Hoogeveners. ”The best thing is that you can see images of what Hoogeveen looked like.” The association was just looking for a place to show it.

That search ended at the Hema in Hoogeveen. A manager of the department store saw the photos of the can factory and came up with the idea of entering into a partnership. ”They want to make their new location interesting for people who come for breakfast,” says Bisschop.
