Phoenix are releasing their single “Alpha Zulu” this Wednesday (June 1st). The French quartet from Versailles are also in the final stages of finishing their new album, their first since 2017’s ‘Ti Amo’.

Both the writing process and the recording of Alpha Zulu took place at the Motorbass studio of Zdar, a musician, producer and close friend of the band who passed away in 2019.

Awkward moment as inspiration

The basic concept of the song is an unpleasant event. Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars was on a flight when his plane encountered turbulence. The pilot’s distress calls in the emergency situation led to the song title and idea of ”Alpha Zulu”.

The band hasn’t been completely idle since 2017. Phoenix have since released two singles including “Identical”which was composed for the film “On The Rocks” by Sofia Coppola.
