Phoebe Bridgers relies on political statements. In the past she has spoken out against Donald Trump, supported the Black Lives Matter demonstrations and is now heavily critical of the US Supreme Court. Only in June did the judges decide to overturn the right to abortion. That means: American states decide autonomously about the legality, no longer the women themselves. This hits women in conservative states like Texas particularly hard.
In the interview, Bridgers explained that one dollar per concert ticket goes to abortion providers in the state of New Mexico.
“I hate that the responsibility lies with small organizations instead of the state,” the singer told MSNBC. When asked if young people even know about the Supreme Court’s decision, Bridgers has a clear answer: “I think people are very afraid.”
When she talks about women’s rights during a performance, not everyone is always enthusiastic. Occasionally, visitors would even leave the concert. For the songwriter, it is precisely these reactions that show why it is important to speak your mind. “I’m always nervous that my comments are only going to an audience that would agree with me anyway. It’s good to know that I can reach people who don’t agree with me.”
