Phising attacks: Crypto wallet provider MetaMask issues a warning to users

• Hacked third-party providers by Namecheap
• Scammers attempt to contact MetaMask customers
• Crypto investors should be careful about data sharing

MetaMask is a well-known crypto wallet provider. However, MetaMask is less a wallet and more a digital keychain, because the wallet does not store coins or tokens, but instead the public and private key and the digital signature. This is very confidential data that must be protected from access by unauthorized third parties. But it is precisely this important data that fraudsters are currently trying to swindle.

Phishing attempts at MetaMask users

For example, on the evening of February 12, web host Namecheap discovered that a hacker was using the email system of one of its third-party services to send unauthorized emails to MetaMask users. This phishing email contains a link to a fake MetaMask website that asks customers to enter a secret recovery phrase to keep their wallet safe.

MetaMask immediately warned its customers not to share their seed phrases as this would give the hacker complete control over customer funds. The company also emphasized that it never asks for Know Your Customer (KYC) information and never exchanges account information via email.

Namecheap stops fraudulent emails

According to Cointelegraph, Namecheap has already informed its upstream provider about this “email gateway problem” and asked them to solve it. In the meantime, the web hosting company has successfully stopped the fraudulent emails. Namecheap is now confident that its systems were not breached, so the company restored mail delivery within two hours of receiving the first tip, and has assured that all communications are now from the official source.

This incident once again highlights the importance of vigilance for crypto investors. So it is always advisable to double check website links, email addresses and contact points to avoid becoming a victim of scammers.
