Phenomenal Schouten takes world title in the five kilometers

Irene Schouten can add a new world title. The skater from Hoogkarspel was the fastest in the five kilometers at the World Championship distances in Thialf. She extended her title in this part. She thus closes a difficult and emotional period with a World Cup title.

The West Frisian skated in the last stage and was five seconds ahead of closest attacker Ragne Wiklund, who won the three kilometers on Thursday. Schouten crossed the line after 6 minutes, 41 seconds and 25 hundredths. That was promptly a Dutch record at this distance. Wiklund took silver and Martina Sablikova took bronze.

Schouten finished second in the three kilometers on Thursday, missed the gold on Friday and was third in the mass start yesterday. Not an ideal preparation for Schouten, but the ice queen still finished first in the five kilometers.
