Ireen Wüst won gold in the 1500 meters during the Winter Olympics on Monday morning. The 35-year-old skater from Goirle set a sharp time in the twelfth stage to which the competition had no answer. It is for the Brabant her sixth gold medal.
Wüst started in stage twelve against Canadian Ivanie Blondin. She once again showed that she can peak at the right time. She set an Olympic record with a time of 1 minute and 53.28 seconds.
We had to wait for the last stage in which world record holder Miho Takagi would come into action. With one lap to go, the Japanese drove exactly the same. But in the end, she gave it away on the last lap and Wüst took her sixth gold medal.
For Wüst it is her last Olympic Games. She was already the most successful Olympian, but has given even more shine to her palmares with this gold medal. She has won a gold medal in five consecutive Olympics. No one has ever managed to do that before.
Later in this tournament she will compete in the 1000 meters and the team pursuit. There are once again opportunities for a gold medal.
