Petition for the preservation of De Zeehoek swimming pool handed over, politicians want a new bath soon

A new swimming pool must be built in Wervershoof as soon as possible, that is the outcome of the information evening about the future of the Zeehoek swimming pool tonight. There was little enthusiasm for the petition, which was signed by more than 2,700 people, to keep the Zeehoek swimming pool open longer.

The evening started with a plea from society. Krista Heus, the initiator to keep De Zeehoek swimming pool open longer, reinforced the 2,741 collected signatures with her own words.

She also described the ping-pong of recent years within politics in Medemblik: a new swimming pool, but not a new swimming pool. Refurbishment, no renovation. Money, no money. The result: thousands of people who will soon be without a swimming pool. “If you care even a little about your residents, you’ll reconsider your decision.”

Primary school children Nijs and Renske handed in collected signatures from children to keep the pool open. “My little brother also wants to swim,” said Renske very tough. A room full of people applauded the kids and Krista’s action.

Unity

After a state of affairs from alderman Gringhuis and a civil servant from the municipality, it was up to the political parties. It soon became clear that there was unanimity between the parties on a number of points. There was no real debate about whether there is a possibility to keep the current swimming pool open longer, as the signatories of the petition want.

All political parties want to sit down with each other to submit a motion to the council to realize a target group pool at De Westrand in Wervershoof as soon as possible. The parties want to set clear frameworks and reserve the current subsidy from swimming pool De Zeehoek for the new pool.

Still some questions

There was also talk of investing the net proceeds from the Zeehoek site in the new swimming pool. Only a number of parties such as GroenLinks and Morgen! wonder if this is realistic. Those doubts also exist when using volunteers in the swimming pool, because is that safe enough? “Leave this to professional instructors”, said council member Van der Geest of Morgen!

After the consensus, it is now time for action to prevent new ping pong. The college will soon submit an application for credit for a new feasibility study. “I would rather not have done this either, but we have to do things in an orderly manner,” said alderman Gringhuis. The alderman concluded the evening with compliments for the solidarity in politics.
