Petition against the arrival of a public toilet on Noordermarkt: “The house is going to stink!”

Residents of the Noordermarkt in Amsterdam have started a petition against the arrival of a public toilet next to the church. According to the initiators of ‘Red de Noordermarkt’, the arrival of the toilet block creates an unsafe feeling for parents and children and an influx of tourists to the square.

The intention is to have a toilet accessible to men, women and people with disabilities. The municipality opted for a self-cleaning toilet, just like the one on Leidseplein. That could curb public urination, but the local residents that AT5 speaks to are not happy about the toilet.

“You would expect it at the Johan Cruijff Arena, but not here on the canal belt,” says a local resident. The local resident would prefer to see a toilet block built in the ‘canal belt style’. “I think so cutehe laughs.

“We are not against the arrival of a public toilet, but there are better options”

Peter paul, initiator ‘save the northern market’

One of the initiators, Peter-Paul, is not against the arrival of a public toilet on the square, but is not in favor of the location of the building. “We fear that the peace and charm will be disturbed,” he says. “We are not against the arrival of a public toilet, but there are better options” Another local resident: “It also tends to be a place where drug dealers and loiterers go.”

The municipality has announced that it will soon enter into discussions with the initiators of the petition to discuss these options.
