The International Olympic Committee in the IOC has recently considered whether Russian and Belarusian athletes could return to international competitions.

The issue has caused resistance in many member states. The Olympic Committees of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland submitted a joint statement a week and a half ago, in which they said they were opposed to the idea of a return due to Russia’s ongoing military actions.

The executive director of the Swedish Olympic Committee tried to bring out a common position Peter Reinebowho will participate in the two-day European Olympic Committees’ seminar organized in Greece as a representative of the Nordic countries.

Reinebo says that he informed the participant guard that the invitation to the event received by Russia and Belarus is a wrong decision.

– Then they disconnected the speaker. Then the chairman (Spyros Capralos) came forward and said that politics was not allowed to be discussed in the room.

The Swedish boss finished speaking, but few heard him because the microphone was turned off. The representative of Ukraine had also been prevented from presenting his opinion on the matter.

Reinebo says that he discussed the matter later with Capralos. The Greek had reminded the Swede that at the beginning it had been agreed that only technical matters would be discussed at the meeting. It had been mentioned separately that political speeches are not part of the program.

– It was a very unpleasant experience to be treated like that, Reinebo told STV.

Despite the invitation, the Russian representative was not present. The representative of Belarus participated in the seminar via remote connection.
