They did it again: Peter and Jolanda van der Heijden from Gemert have, just like last year, the tastiest asparagus in the province. This was decided by the seven-member jury of the Brabants Asparagus Genootschap on Monday evening, after a strict inspection.
“Last year was fantastic and it is again now”, beams Peter. Despite that top score in 2022, he did not see the new victory coming. “Not at all. They were asparagus from a completely different plot.”
That may be so, for the jury they were again the tastiest. “They said they were head and shoulders above the rest.” So what was that about? “They look at all kinds of parts. What the asparagus look like, how they taste, the bite…”
“I used to think it was luck. I think differently now.”
But how is it possible that Peter and Jolanda, of all people, once again control all those factors down to the last detail? “Well, that’s the blacksmith’s secret. No kidding: I can’t put my finger on it exactly. Before I always thought it was luck too. I think differently now.”
Last year, Peter said he would send a box of asparagus to PSV. He did the same with his first victory in 2016. “Then PSV became champion.”
The same effect failed to materialize last season and it seems unlikely that the scale will come to Eindhoven this year as well. “For the cup final next weekend then? Well, you give me ideas!”
