Peter Gillis has to have his holiday villa demolished, but he does not accept that | show

Peter Gillis and Oostappen Holiday Park Blauwe Meer in Lommel are given ten months to demolish a holiday villa that was built without a permit. If they do not, they must pay a penalty of 250 euros for each day that the villa is still there. That is what the Hasselt criminal court ruled on Tuesday. Gillis appeals to the court of Antwerp.

Construction of the villa started in May 2019, a house measuring 15 by 16.5 meters. Good for sixteen people, but without a permit. Gillis insisted that before building the villa he had taken the professional advice of an architect and the mayor of Lommel and that he was convinced ‘everything would be fine’. The holiday villa would serve as a ‘show house’, a preview of the other fifteen villas that the park owner still had planned.

But it soon turned out that the holiday villa was causing problems: shortly after construction, the city found out about the illegal construction and took legal action: “It is clear that this is a villa, a house, they know that you need a permit there. must have,” said the public prosecutor.

‘They knew it wasn’t legal’

Gillis and Oostappen Holiday Park Blauwe Meer now have ten months to level the villa to the ground. “They just started building the holiday home, even though they knew it wasn’t legal,” the verdict reads. If Gillis does not keep to the agreement, there will be a penalty of 250 euros per day that the house is there.

The facts show antisocial behavior, laziness and sheer indifference to the nuisance caused

From court verdict

The court also sentenced the Brabant holiday park tycoon to a fine of 8,000 euros, half of which was postponed. Oostappen was fined 60,000 euros, half of which was also postponed. “They set up a holiday villa, which is nothing compared to the other holiday homes,” is the verdict of the Hasselt criminal court.

At least three trees were also felled. The facts show antisocial behavior, laziness and sheer indifference to the nuisance caused. Their behavior is a mockery of the efforts made by both the government and citizens to responsibly use the available spaces in accordance with the purposes assigned to them.”
