Peter Ferrante, the fisherman who changed the history of water polo

Peter John Cutino dreamed of getting on a boat with his father, who arrived in California from Isola delle Femmine, then became one of the greatest water polo coaches. And his strategies were born under the light of a lampara

This is a story made of ingenuity, love and sardines. Lots of sardines, to base ourselves on an economy. And of true Italianness, with that passion and that hint of splendid obtuseness that has made us unique in the world. It happens that one day Peter comes home to his house. He is 40 years old, comes from a devastating year and discovers that his father Paolo – in America he is Paul, but woe betide him at home if he calls him that – he has a devil in his hair. On his boat there is a need for a man, for Paul it is natural that that man should be his son. Peter has a surge of pride: “Dad, I have traveled the world, I studied at the best university in the world, they call me professor, I would like to enjoy my vacation days.” Paolo looks at him like someone who has listened to everything but hasn’t understood anything: “Petru, will you come fishing or will you be a wastrel?”. Ball in seven, Peter gives up. And it’s not like him, because Peter John Cutino rarely loses. He is one of America’s winningest coaches in his sport, water polo. Even more: he is someone who teaches how to win, even outside of sport.
