Peter Doherty: “I’ve been at the forefront of indie sleaze for years!”

Last Friday (June 24th) the Libertines opened the Other Stage of the Glastonbury Festival 2022 at lunchtime. After his performance, Peter Doherty spoke, among other things, about the return of the so-called “indie sleaze” fashion trend: “I’ve been the spearhead of indie sleaze for years!” When asked by “NME” that the kids are back for the music and fashion of the indie era between 2002 and 2008, he replied smugly: “Oh really? Good luck to them then!”

Trash and vintage go hand in hand

Indie Sleaze is the name of a tongue-in-cheek retro aesthetic whose prominent representatives listen to names such as Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss, Peter Doherty and Sky Ferreira. The fashion trend was probably born in the early noughties in the hip London indie clubs. It later spread across the globe through sites like Tumblr and MySpace. Her features include smudged eyeliner, tousled and side-swept bangs, and a mix of vintage and trashy clothing styles.

New Libertines record ready “by the end of the year”.

A video message from Volodymyr Zelenskyj preceded the Libertines concert. He called on audiences to “spread the truth” about the war with Russia and to share the inclusive and loving sentiment of Glastonbury “with anyone whose freedom is under attack.” When asked if the speech added any additional emotional weight to his performance, Doherty said, “Definitely.”

Asked about the Libertines, the 43-year-old said, “The chemistry is consistent with the original recipe, with the flourishing, the harmony and the progression of the dream and promise of Albion.” Soon they will travel to Jamaica for the purpose of songwriting. “There’s a lot of things on the table – some really good, strong and melodic rock ‘n’ roll songs. We also have ideas for soundscapes and spoken word stuff.” The record could be finished soon: “By the end of the year I think – hopefully. Hopefully we’ll have the demos ready in the summer and then we’ll see.”

Mother Doherty’s troubles

Speaking of his June 16 book, A Likely Lad, Doherty said, “It’s basically a ghost-written autobiography. Featuring all the best stories I’ve loved telling and thought were funny – all carried over! My mom said if I wasn’t sued, beaten up, or killed within a week of showing up, she’d be very surprised.”
