“Game of Thrones”: Peter Dinklage comments on the controversial series finale for the first time

An archive classic from December 2022. Peter Dinklage commented for the first time on the final episode of “Game of Thrones”. Two and a half years have passed since the TV show ended. Rarely has a series finale been so polarizing. Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister in the series, recently spoke about the subsequent backlash from many fans in a recent interview.

“[Die Fans] wanted pretty white people to ride off into the sunset at the end. Just by the way, it’s fiction. Dragons appear. Get over it,” said the actor and continued: “[Spaß beiseite]the series subverts what you think about it, and that’s what I love about it. Yes, the name was ‘Game of Thrones’ and [alle fragten immer:] Who will take the throne?’. “I don’t know why they thought that was so important because the show was so much more than that,” he told The New York Times.

“Villains have become heroes, and heroes have become villains.”

“One of my favorite moments was when the dragon set the throne on fire because it silenced this entire conversation, which was really disrespectful and kind of brilliant from the show’s producers: ‘Shut up, that’s not what this is about’. They did that all the time, you expected something and something else happened. […] “We had to break it up when we did, because what the show was really good at was breaking preconceptions: villains became heroes, and heroes became villains.”

Towards the end of the interview, the actor also addresses the fate of Daenerys, perhaps the most controversial twist of the series finale: “When you turn to the story and follow the development of tyrants, you see that they don’t start out as tyrants. I talk about, spoiler alert, how the characters developed towards the end of Game of Thrones. It happened slowly, and I loved seeing how the characters became more corrupt through their power. What happens to people’s moral compass when “They get a sense of power? People have complicated personalities, you know?”. Finally, Dinklage adds: “Even if everyone has their own ideas [zum Finale von „Game of Thrones“] “I don’t think any of it was as good as what the show delivered.”

The actor will next be seen in the musical film adaptation of “Cyrano.” He is reprising his role from the 2019 off-Broadway production of the same play. Meanwhile, HBO is currently producing “House of the Dragon,” the prequel series to “Game of Thrones.” There are also three additional spin-offs of the series in the works.
