On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military special operation in the Donbass. According to him, it is carried out to protect the inhabitants of the region from “genocide” by the “Kyiv regime.” The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the military strikes at military facilities, but not at Ukrainian cities.

Many countries condemned the decision and warned of backlash. In particular, the United States and the European Union promised to introduce new sanctions against Moscow. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised to freeze Russian property in the EU and close the country’s banks access to European markets. Czech President Milos Zeman called for Russia to be disconnected from the SWIFT payment system.
