Perttu Hyvärinen: forgot to inform the doping testers of his location

The Finnish skier received a note for negligence related to the doping test. It freaked me out.

Skier Perttu Hyvärinen writes in the blog of the Finnish Center for Sports Ethics, or Suek, that he received a notice of negligence related to doping testing.

– It was completely due to human error. Yes, it was quite an oppressive place. Somehow I felt really stigmatized, Hyvärinen writes.

Athletes subject to doping testing must inform where and when they are available for the doping test.

The athlete is considered to have neglected his obligation to report whereabouts information if he fails to report his whereabouts without an acceptable reason, or if the information is incorrect. In this case, it is a matter of neglecting the location information regulations recorded in the anti-doping rules.

The athlete has the opportunity to provide a written explanation of what happened. According to Hyvärinen, it was an oversight.

– The season is long and tough, then during the transitional period we are on vacation, and we don’t really want to think about work during that time. However, the system doesn’t recognize any holidays, you have to mark it every day. Sometimes the updates are forgotten.

– On the other hand, after that (marking) there was a sharp increase in reporting.

In Hyvärinen’s case, it is not a doping violation.

If an athlete commits three violations of whereabouts regulations within a 12-month period, the action is interpreted as a doping violation. The result is a ban of 12–24 months.

Hyvärinen does not specify, because he forgot to report his whereabouts. He admits that being subject to doping testing is not always pleasant.

– Few still really like testing and location information systems. It’s not always nice when the doorbell rings, for example, in the morning after a long race trip.

Not as seriously

In the blog, Hyvärinen praises Finnish doping testers as tough professionals.

The skier feels that ethical sports and doping testing are not taken as seriously around the world as they are at home.

– Internationally, sometimes it feels like everyone is not on the same page, and that’s frustrating. Testing activities could be more open if you could find out how many competitors are being tested, this would certainly increase transparency. Black is good when the athletes themselves talk about the tests, this increases transparency.
