Personnel bottlenecks in JVA Tegel – some inmates not at work

Personnel bottlenecks in the JVA Tegel have had a significant impact on the daily routine of the inmates in part of the facility.

On Tuesday, the staff situation there was so tense that the prisoners could not pursue “employment and qualification measures” as usual and stayed longer in the cells, according to the Senate Department for Justice, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination.

To ensure security, all prisoners remained in their cells until noon, after which they were unlocked again.

The administration justified the bottlenecks with the omission of the corona protection measures according to the Infection Protection Act. Justice Senator Lena Kreck (left) had already indicated at the end of March that a tense staff situation due to illness over Easter could not be ruled out, it said.

However, the administration pointed out that suitable measures would be taken in the prisons in order to be able to counteract the dynamic corona situation despite the abolition of the measures.

In this specific case, personnel support from other areas of the Tegel JVA corresponds to the necessary measures to be able to maintain service operations even in times of a pandemic.

From Wednesday, the daily routine should be as usual, emphasized the administration.
