Was in the treble squad in 2009/10
Marko Arnautovic’s return to Inter Milan is perfect. The Nerazzurri officially announced the signing of the 34-year-old striker on loan from Bologna FC on Wednesday evening. According to the Champions League finalist, there is a purchase obligation for the Austrian national player when certain sporting factors are reached, usually a certain number of appearances.
Initially, the Italian media assumed that Arnautovic would be transferred back to San Siro, where he was part of the triple squad in 2009/10. Gianluca Di Marzio, among others, put the amount to be paid at 8 million euros, at least 2 million euros more than what Bologna paid Chinese club Shanghai Port in 2021. In addition, the transfer volume could quickly increase by EUR 2 million. With then 10 million euros, Arnautovic would be the eighth player to flush an eight-digit amount into the Rossoblù coffers with a sale. He would also be the second most expensive player aged 34 or over at the time of transfer, behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
Arnautovoic twice in the top 5: Most expensive Austrians in football
A year before his transfer to Werder Bremen, Inter loaned the attacker from FC Twente in 2009, but Arnautovic only made three appearances for the first team. This is likely to change now: the native of Vienna takes over the squad from Edin Dzeko (37) in Milan, who switched to Fenerbahce on a free transfer after the end of his contract. The former Wolfsburg player made 52 competitive appearances last year, albeit not always from the start.
Arnautovic’s competitors are Lautaro Martínez (25), Marcus Thuram (26) and Joaquín Correa (29). He scored 24 goals in 54 Serie A league games for Bologna.
