Pepsi’s recipe changed in silence

Today, sugary Pepsi also contains sweeteners.

Pepsi’s ingredient list reveals that sweeteners are also added to the soft drink these days.

Have you been under the belief that regular Pepsi is sweetened with only sugar, without sweeteners? Misconceived. This is revealed by Pepsi’s ingredient list, which shows that the soft drink currently contains, in addition to sugar, two sweeteners, acesulfame K and sucralose, whose e-codes are E950 and E955.

Product manager Erkka Talvela Hartwallitta tells Pippuri.fi that Pepsi’s recipe has been changed at the end of 2021. The renewed Pepsi contains less sugar than before and therefore fewer kilocalories. Pepsi now has 35 percent fewer kilocalories than before.

Pepsi’s biggest competitor, Coca-Cola, is sweetened with only sugar. Why has it been decided to add sweeteners to Pepsi?

– PepsiCo wants to help consumers reduce added sugar in their diet. According to Hartwall’s recent study, almost 60 percent of Finns avoid sugar consumption or try to reduce it, says Talvela.

Has the recipe change been announced or has it happened quietly?

– The ingredients of the renewed Pepsi are indicated in the ingredient list on the packaging, as required by legislation.

Talvela says that the reform has resulted in some consumer surveys.

– People are interested in the backgrounds behind the change.

Most of the Pepsi drunk in Finland is Pepsi Max. Pepsi Max is completely sugar-free. The drink is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame K.
