Research has shown that alcohol drinkers are more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes than people who do not drink alcohol.
Attractive to mosquitoes
Sitting in the garden on a balmy summer evening with a glass of wine: what could be better than that? We understand very well that you enjoy this. One drawback: with alcohol in your blood you are a lot more attractive to mosquitoes. So it may just be that you are pricking deliciously in the garden with your wine in your hand.
Research
Japanese scientists have investigated the influence of alcohol consumption on mosquitoes. The shivers are already running down our body: during this study a brave group of participants was asked to take a seat in a room full of mosquitoes.
With and without alcohol on
First, the participants entered the room sober, then again after drinking 350 ml of beer with 5.5% alcohol. The participants’ body temperature and sweat were monitored during this study.
Odor
You guessed it: this study showed that participants were stung much more often when they had consumed alcohol. In all likelihood, this has to do with the smell you get when you drink alcohol. So, the choice is yours: do you leave that wine behind, or do you just take those mosquito bites for granted?
