People in their seventies say yes on Valentine’s Day: ‘You want to make something beautiful out of life again’

Theo (75) and Alie (74) have both been married for 50 years. But being alone is just being alone and to the delight of the new couple, they met two years ago.

To add to the joy, they tied the knot today, on Valentine’s Day. “We wanted to do that on a special day,” says Theo. “And Valentine’s Day is the day of hearts.”

And it’s a double celebration, because Theo can also blow out 75 candles today. “Yes, it is all very special,” says Theo. “That we can still do this at this age. That we are still here. And that you can start something new again. That is very nice, something new.” A beaming Theo still has butterflies in his stomach. “Especially in the very beginning. I thought I wouldn’t have that anymore at this age, but it’s even more intense.”

The wedding was at the Apostolic Society in Meppel. Theo and Alie thoroughly enjoyed it, with a room full of guests, a master of ceremonies and a wedding official.

What do they like so much about each other? “Theo is a very sweet, spontaneous man,” says Alie. Conversely, Theo thinks Alie is ‘a very nice appearance’. “She is spontaneous and has a chat with everyone. Just great.”
