In New York on the pitch the great Italians of the past challenge the MLS stars with some ‘loans’: the Liberian in attack, Djorkaeff behind the strikers. An initiative wanted by Infantino to embrace the many Italians who were expecting the national team at the World Cup

Rocco Commisso Soccer Stadium, New York: it is the setting for a seven-on-seven match of the highest quality. Let’s start from the bench: Nesta, Vieri, Pirlo, guest star George Weah. Then everyone on the field. Coach Roberto Baggio, assistant Marco Materazzi, injured but still close to the team. The Italian legends are here to play against the great former MLS players: Pagliuca in goal, Panucci and Zaccardo behind, Ambrosini in the middle, Iaquinta in front with Pepito Rossi and the other guest Djorkaeff to finish.

The initiative was desired by Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA: he arrived here to join the group and also greet the community of our compatriots in New York (Italian origins). A way to embrace the Italians who were expecting the national team at the World Cup. Nothing to do, waiting in vain. Infantino explains: “I know perfectly the feeling of us Italians abroad, the disappointment of not being at the World Cup. I told myself that we had to do something for our communities and here we are. Thanks above all to the kids.” Applause (and goals) for everyone. The audience at Columbia University, a structure financed by Rocco Commisso, appreciated it. The hosts are his wife Cathrine and his son Joseph, current Fiorentina number one.
