Alarm in Saarland: A police officer was injured by shots during an operation. The police said on Twitter on Friday.

At around 8.30 a.m., the weapons authorities began using a residential building on Wilhelmstrasse in the Klarenthal district of Saarbrücken. In focus: a 67-year-old resident.

The SEK is included as standard in operations of this type. The situation escalated, a SEK officer was seriously but not fatally injured. Since the shooter is still inside, police have called in more forces, including a negotiating force.

Another police officer was injured by flying glass fragments.

The 67-year-old barricaded himself in his apartment after the shot was fired. The Wilhelmstraße/Warndtstraße area in Saarbrücken-Klarenthal is cordoned off over a large area.

It is still unclear why the mission got so out of hand. Officers are urging residents to stay indoors and away from windows as the perpetrator fired a gun from an apartment window.
