In the night between Friday and Saturday, big news for Finns broke, when the promoter Matchroom Boxing told X that there were problems with Robert Helenius’s doping test.

Helenius had given the sample a day before the Anthony Joshua fight.

Was in Helenius’ team in London Pekka Mäki said he was really saddened by the news.

– I firmly believe that with the information I have, Helenius is clean. However, I am not a representative of Helenius, but as a member of the team, it is sad that such a stain has come. I firmly believe that it is not a deliberate or systematic use of doping substances.

– Robert has had a long career and has been tested hundreds of times, and nothing has ever been found. In Britain, these seem to come like mushrooms in the rain, Mäki continues.

Mäki raises the bar for the independent private Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (Vada).

Mäki says that blood and urine tests were taken from Helenius in London before and after the match. In London, tests were taken by Vada and the British agency UKAD.

– It is surprising that different findings have started to be found in the British. It’s pretty unclear what you’re doing there.

Mäki also wonders about Matchroom Boxing’s publishing method. He emphasizes that it is his personal opinion, not that of Helenius’s camp.

– In these matters, you always have to think about which time cycle someone publishes something vague and whose job it is to make it public. However, we are talking about the athlete’s personal test result. It does not correspond to my sense of justice.

– The athlete or his representative and then the event organizer must be informed about it. But who has the right to tell about such things? That output channel is a little weird. This is terrible news and we should think about the fact that the athlete is surprised with his pants down and should start commenting on the matter, about which there is very little information.

In Finland, testing is only done in title matches

Mäki did not start to assess whether Helenius will lose the match fee as a result.

– Having been there in London, we were precise about what to drink and eat. But damage can always happen. He is a pure athlete, sometimes something may enter the athlete’s body through supplements. It’s a shame that the organizer has announced such a vague thing.

– Ambiguities can be about anything. Maybe they indicate that they are testing athletes. The Helenius team will certainly explain what is going on with it.

In Finland, fighters are only tested in connection with title matches. The Finnish Professional Boxing Federation does not fall under the scope of Suek’s testing by the Finnish Sports Ethics Center.

– I would hope that the professional boxing association would belong to Suek. We would get into random testing.
