Pedro Rocha, from the Extremadura Federation, will succeed Rubiales as head of a temporary manager

After the resignation of Luis Rubiales becomes effective, the RFEF mechanisms will be activated for his relief. According to the Federation’s statutes, upon resigning and not being disqualified, the person in charge of provisionally replacing it will be a vice president. Pedro Rocha, current president of the Extremeña Federation, is the chosen one. He will be in charge of the RFEF until elections are called. The idea is to request the CSD to advance them to the first half of 2024 to resolve the transitory situation as soon as possible.

Rocha will lead the management board. In 2017, with the dismissal of Ángel María Villar, Jorge Larrea, treasurer of the RFEF, temporarily assumed the position. In this case, the same appeal is not raised. The president of the Extremeña Federation is one of the vice presidents of the RFEF together with Miquel Bestard (former president of the Balearic Federation), Antonio Suárez (Canary Islands), Maximino Martínez (Asturias), Rafael del Amo (Navarra), Joan Soteras (Catalonia) , Salvador Gomar (Valencia), Elvira Andrés (former general secretary of the Spanish Basketball Federation, among other positions) and Pablo Lozano (Andalusia).

The decision to choose Pedro Rocha as his successor came after a Rubiales summit with his cabinet and several territorial barons. Businessman since 1993 and manager of three establishments owned by him, he was a futsal player in División de Honor for several seasons. He served as manager and member of the coaching staff of Cacereño. He also held the position of provincial delegate in Cáceres of the Extremadura Football Federation, which he would end up presiding over in 2013.

The new ‘boss’ of Spanish football became vice-presidency at the hands of Rubiales. Other names that had been proposed, due to their seniority, were Bestard and Suárez. The Spaniard was actively in favor of the resigning president, assuring that he “had been hunted”.

Later, the managing board will call elections among the members of the assembly and the elections will be called when the term that Rubiales should have finished ends. That is, in 2024, the Olympic year, something defined in the statutes of the federation. In no case will the outgoing top leader be able to stand in these elections, although it is not ruled out that one of the candidates is aligned with his position.

“In the event that, for any reason, they do not complete that period of office, those who occupy the vacancies will hold the position for a time equal to the time remaining for those replaced, who may not stand for a new election until the end of the term. Olympic period for which they were chosen”, collect the statutes of the RFEF. Facing the new electoral scenario, the assembly members will not change.

In fact, among those who were summoned for today’s extraordinary assembly were names like Luis Enrique, still as national coach. At this point it should be remembered that Luis de la Fuente, coach of the men’s national team, and Jorge Vilda, recently crowned in the World Cup, have a contract until 2024. The women’s coach was offered the renewal, but refused to sit down to negotiate. Likewise, processes such as the one initiated by the Government through the CSD in the TAD against the actions of Rubiales with Jenni Hermoso will remain active.
