Pearl Jam: Pioneers of environmental activism

Together for a greener future: Milky Chance will open the Greentech Festival 2022 on June 22nd with an exclusive Telekom Street Gig. ROLLING STONE and Telekom will bring the music highlight to the stage together. In the Berlin power plant, the folktronica duo will play new songs as well as their greatest hits. Telekom will broadcast the show live from 7 p.m. on the #dabei channel on MagentaTV. Fans can also experience the performance in the free live stream on MagentaMusiker. At this point we portray artists who have made a name for themselves through their green commitment.

Even if they would probably never put the shoe on themselves: Pearl Jam are pioneers when it comes to environmental activism in the music industry. Because the musicians have been committed to protecting nature since they were founded in the early 1990s. In 2003, for example, it was announced that the band had bought a piece of rainforest in Madagascar to compensate for the environmental damage caused by their world tour at the time. The area should also cover future emissions, since the protection of the area reduces their carbon footprint by 140 million tons of carbon dioxide. “Since 2003, Pearl Jam have reduced their touring carbon footprint by self-imposing a voluntary ‘carbon tax’ and by donating a portion of touring profits to charities. They are committed to reforestation and combating climate change. But there’s more to do,” the band said on their website.

They’re also making a difference on their own doorstep: Pearl Jam have teamed up with the Quinault Indian Nation and the Tulalip tribes in Washington state to rebuild rural economies and protect the state from climate change. Washington residents can join this movement.

During oil spills and other man-made environmental problems, the musicians also dug deep into their pockets to do their part. In 2015, for example, the band donated $100,000 to victims of a toxic mudslide in Brazil and mobilized their fans to do the same. In 2020, Pearl Jam also invited Greta Thunberg to star in their video for Retrograde. She took on the role of a fortune teller who sees natural disasters in her crystal ball.

Eddie Vedder and his colleagues are aware of their influence and take their social responsibility seriously. The singer also regularly takes part in fundraisers and charity events organized by environmental organizations – among other things, as a surfer friend, he supports the Kelly Slater Foundation and Jack Johnson’s Kokua Hawaii Foundation to protect the world’s oceans.
