Pearl Jam have announced tour dates as part of their DARK MATTER concert tour – the band around Eddie Vedder will present the new songs from their upcoming album DARK MATTER, which will be released on April 19, 2024. The successor to GIGATON from 2020 includes eleven songs (tracklist here) and appears in various configurations (overview here).

DARK MATTER, unlike its predecessor GIGATON, was recorded in a relatively short time and, from what you hear from the band, is said to have a harder sound than many other songs of the past. The first new single already suggests this.
What is definitely clear now: Pearl Jam’s cover and title of the album are based on an astrophysical term that is anything but easy to understand, but has a mystical dimension.
What is dark matter?
Dark matter is basically a hypothetical form of matter. Unlike normal matter, which is made up of atoms and emits or absorbs electromagnetic radiation, dark matter does not interact in this way and is therefore invisible to us. However, their existence is observed through their gravitational effect on visible matter.
- Galaxies rotate much faster than would be expected based on visible matter alone. This suggests that additional, invisible matter must be present to explain this rotation.
- Dark matter makes up about 27 percent of the total matter-energy in the universe, while normal matter only makes up about five percent. The rest is made up of dark energy, which makes up the majority of the energy in the universe.
- However, the exact composition of dark matter is unknown. It is believed to consist of particles that are different from the known particles of Standard Model physics. These hypothetical particles are understood as WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) or axions.
- Dark matter plays a crucial role in the formation and structuring of the universe. Their gravitational pull helps form galaxies, galaxy clusters, and large-scale cosmic structures.
- Although dark matter has not yet been directly detected, various observations and measurements have provided indirect evidence of its existence. Nevertheless, the exact nature of dark matter remains one of the unsolved questions in modern astrophysics.
How did the cover of DARK MATTER come about?
The cover of DARK MATTER could show dark matter in (symbolized) action, so to speak. The light painting was produced by Alexandr Gnezdilov. The artist created them using a large, self-made kaleidoscope. It is not the first time that Pearl Jam has devoted themselves to the abstract representation of signals or substances: “Binaural” from 2000 already featured a cosmic image.

The band introduced DARK MATTER at a listening party at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in late January, and frontman Eddie Vedder told the audience, “Without exaggeration, I think this is our best work.” The LP will be available on vinyl and CD as well as digitally.
