Paxton Whitehead, the veteran actor known for Friends, has died

Paxton Whitehead had a long career on Broadway and in several TV series.

Long-time English actor Paxton Whitehead has died at the age of 85. Whitehead died at a hospital in Arlington on Friday, his son Charles Whitehead confirms to the American media.

Whitehead appeared in several plays and is also remembered for many 1990s comedy series. He is remembered, among other things, for the role of Mr. Waltham in the Frendit series.

Whitehead earned a 1980 Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical From Camelot, in which he portrayed Pellinore. He also appeared in several other plays and musicals on Broadway between 1962 and 2018.

Whitehead made his film debut in Back to School (1986), where he played Dr. Philip Barbay.

Whitehead was born on October 17, 1937 in Kent. He moved to the United States in 1961, when he directed his first play. The following year, he made his Broadway debut.

He was also artistic director of the Shaw Festival from 1973 to 1977. During that time, he hosted the visits of Queen Elizabeth and the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, among others.
