Not a nice welcome for the brand new mayor of Drimmelen, Boy Scholtze. Saturday night he woke up with a start because a paving stone had been thrown through the window of his new house. Scholtze has been living there with his husband Loek for three days. Last December he was installed as mayor of Drimmelen.
“This simply has an impact,” Scholtze responds. “To be honest, I would have appreciated a bunch of flowers or a card as a welcome to the municipality.”
According to the mayor, two stones were thrown. One of them went through the window and caused a lot of damage in the living room. “It is mainly material damage. There are shards of glass everywhere. But we were still unpacking, so we may have been a bit lucky in that regard,” says the mayor.
It was mostly scary, he says. “Very annoying. I have no explanation for it, except that I find it very sad that this is happening in this way.”
Scholtze would have preferred that the perpetrator or perpetrators had spoken to him. “I think I’m very open and approachable, so let’s just keep talking if you disagree with something. Destruction is so unnecessary and pointless. I have no words for that.”
“We shouldn’t think this is normal.”
The mayor has filed a report and the police are investigating. In the meantime, measures are being taken at Scholtze’s house. “I can’t say what they are. But this proves to me that we really have something to do with all of us in this hardening society. We shouldn’t think this is normal.”
On social media, the mayor can count on the support of people who live in Drimmelen. “Who does that now? We are very happy with you,” writes Ans, for example. And Saskia writes: “How low is this. I don’t know what to say. Good luck to your husband.”
Scholtze is the youngest mayor of the Netherlands at 32 years old. On December 21, he was installed as mayor of Drimmelen. Before that, he worked as an operational manager of project development and property management in Tilburg.
